FX Makeup Competition - International Horror Hotel Film Festival

SFX Makeup Competition: Sunday, June 21, 2026

Set up: 10:30am

Competition: 11:00am to 4:00pm

Awards Ceremony: 4:30pm

Competition is free. Registration is required.

Contestants will compete in 2 categories and scored separately for both; 1) Sci-Fi/Fantasy and 2) Horror.
Makeup will be performed in the convention center area with monitoring by judges.
Contestants must bring one model for each division (total of 2) along with all makeup, materials, tools, etc.
Makeup SFX are judged from the neck up. However costumes are allowed for overall presentation.
Prosthetics (full or partial) are not required. If used, they should be made by the MUA on site, not purchased, and should not be pre-painted or applied in advance.
Store bought items such as teeth, sticks, string, jewelry etc may be used but not already put together or applied in advance.
Wig and hair elements may be store bought, but not applied in advance. Judging will include looking at skill level in applying of any hair/fur elements.
Artist may only use materials and products that are safe and designed for skin application.

Judging criteria:

Technical Application – use of color, prosthetics and/or materials, blending, detail and texture.
Creativity – imagination, concept of design, uniqueness
Theme and Concept – How well the makeup interprets and visually tells the story of the theme or character.
Overall Presentation – How the makeup works as a complete look.

Awards:

Medals will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each category.
